SEO for E-commerce: Increasing organic traffic for myG Digital

myG is one of India’s most trusted consumer electronics stores that caters to more than 1.5 million customers. With more than 80 stores across Kerala selling phones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and more, myG is an established enterprise in the industry.
myG recently started an e-commerce store and they wanted to replicate the offline success in the digital landscape. The e-commerce website was popular among people who knew the myG brand and searched for it, but there was not much traffic from other relevant keywords.
myG wanted to increase their digital brand awareness by ranking for non-branded keywords. The goal was to target high-traffic competitive keywords and improve current search rankings significantly.
We started off by defining the objectives of the SEO exercise we were going to conduct - increase organic traffic and improve the domain authority. Our SEO strategy to achieve these objectives involved:
- Keyword research and strategy
- On-page optimization
- Content creation
- Link building
As in any SEO work, we needed to get the keyword strategy right from the get-go. By using keyword tools and conducting competitor analysis, we were able to pinpoint relevant keywords that myG required in various phases of the user journey.
Numerous pages on the website were optimized for relevant keywords including the category and product pages. New category pages that targeted new keywords were created.
The funnel diagram shows the phases and relevant keywords that were targeted at each phase. We made use of blog articles to attract visitors in the awareness and consideration phases. Category and product pages were used to target commercial keywords for the decision phase.
As part of on-page optimization, the user interface of the website was redesigned for better SEO performance. The blog was redesigned to keep the readers more interested and lower the bounce rate.
We also wanted to build genuine backlinks for myG to improve the domain authority. So we set up an email outreach program for guest blogging.
As part of this SEO work, we used various tools, which included Ahrefs, SEMRush, UberSuggest, Google Search Console, and Google Keyword Planner.
After several months of SEO activities, myG’s organic traffic started to increase. The domain authority and the number of keywords that ranked on Google also increased. The most significant results are listed out below.
- Organic traffic increased by 150%
- Domain Authority increased by 75%
- The number of keywords ranked on Google increased by 350%
- The bounce rate of the website was reduced by 15%
- The average session duration increased by 10%
- Non-branded keywords make up for 90% of the traffic now
As a result of our SEO efforts, the website started ranking for keywords with a high SEO difficulty. High SEO difficulty means the competition is high and there are many big competitors trying to rank for that term. myG was now ranking for the keyword ‘mobile’ on the first page, which generated a significant amount of traffic.
Content marketing also started to see the results. Some of our blog articles were now featured snippets on Google search. The search result page for the keyword ‘hdr vs uhd’ displayed a featured snippet of myG’s blog article.
